J & T Engagement

FB1762TJEngagement-1It’s blog 8 of 14 in a row! It’s been hard picking and choosing which sessions to blog but I felt I had to include this one as it has has a bit of a sentimental quality to me since it features a family member! Our niece Talia got engaged to a great guy, Jeremy, this past year and I was honoured to be asked to be the photographer for the Wedding next summer. I could hardly wait to get these two in front of my lens and we decided on a Fall engagement session in The Exchange District.

This past Fall was quite busy for the business and I was thankful for the assistance of talented photographer Colin Vandenberg with second shooting and editing help.  Colin was able to join us for the session and I’ve featured a number of his images. Congratulations go out to Talia and Jeremy – wishing you happiness for the future! Happy Planning you two! 🙂

Reena Shah

I’d like to introduce you to one fantastically talented lady.  Seem a bit familiar to you T.V. and movie buffs out there? Reena Shah, a  full ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema Television and Radio Artists union for professional actors) member, has been in the acting scene for over 5 Years. She’s appeared in several projects including Don Cherry: Wrath of Grapes, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, Euphoria, Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure, a Manitoba Nurses Union Commercial, and most recently a web-based video for Manitoba Labour and Immigration.
Reena and I met a few months back when she was interested in having some professional head shots completed for her students of her acting school. I suppose one could say that our “paths continued to cross” over the next couple of month’s- literally!  I was in the Minneapolis airport returning from a Photography Trade Show in Vegas and who do I bump into?  Reena returning from an Acting weekend in L.A. – go figure.
The first thing you notice when you meet Reena is her awesome smile! You tend to quite quickly be won over by her fun nature and soon discover her  passion for acting. While she considers herself an artist first, she says teaching acting has proven to be her true passion. She started her own acting school business called, Expressions Film Studio. I asked her to share a little bit about Expressions.
“I enjoy capturing my student’s talents and I feel a tremendous amount of pride and joy as they begin to discover themselves as artists. Acting is a form of expression and a creative release. At Expressions, students learn confidence, improvisation skills for difficult situations, and how to manage their emotions. It extends far beyond just “performance” and “getting parts”. These are life skills that will empower them throughout their careers, education and relationships. What’s wonderful though, is that the learned skills are masked by the incredible amount of fun we have! We spend our time re-creating scenes from TV shows and movies, participating in improv games, creating our own characters, and producing, writing and acting in our final film project, which by the way, gets shown in a real theatre!”
You have seen some of her students in my past blogs. Reena tells me, “Some are booking parts in movies, commercials and TV shows, some auditioning frequently for casting directors in Winnipeg, and all of them busy laying the foundation of being an actor and learning the basics.” If you are in the Winnipeg area and would like to know more about the acting school or class times you can e-mail expressions.stud@gmail.com .
A couple of weeks ago it was Reena’s turn to get in front of my camera! We had an awesome time creating different looks for her work portfolio, photographing both inside the studio as well as outdoors in the Exchange District. Special thanks to Devon Edie for his assistance with the shoot. (Devon has been shadowing me for a couple of weeks and will be Graduating from High School this year and plans to pursue further studies in photography and Graphics work next year-wishing you a fun year of studies Devon!)

Lindsay and Zach Engagement Session

Congratulations to Lindsay and Zach on their engagement and up coming wedding in a couple of weeks! When I first met Lindasy and Zach and got to know a little about them and their vision for  photography for their wedding, my own vision of whom to have as a second shooter instantly popped into my mind!LOL! See Paolo my “wedding cohort/second shooter” planned to take a little vacation time this summer and it fell right in line with the date of Lindsay and Zach’s wedding. So I needed a new second shooter that was right in line with the style of photography the couple liked. That particular style had “Tristan Fast” written all over it. I knew our photography styles, although different in some aspects, still had common threads running through our work. We had both worked for Studio 448 so I had seen Tristan’s wedding work and loved it.  I knew if we put our photography styles together creatively, we could really make this work for the couple with some exciting results!

The couple chose to have their Engagement session in the Exchange District. Tristan and I met the couple a couple of weeks back for the early evening engagement session and I must say we had an awesome time photographing the couple! Lindsay and Zach were such naturals in front of the camera and such great sports about trying ideas including posing in Portage Ave. traffic for Tristan as seen below. Special thanks go out to the new owner of The Free Press Cafe on McDermont who went out of his way to accommodate our photo session including free coffee for the couple! (Hello! Got to LOVE that! ) I put together a compilation of just some of the images Tristan and I were able to capture during the session. Please enjoy!

Aymee and Stephen’s Wedding

Aymee and Stephen’s wedding on Friday Oct. 22, could not turned out to be a nicer day weather wise! Beautiful plus 15C temps worked wonderfully for the Formals which were planned for the Exchange District.   The couple had booked an entire day of photographing and Paolo and myself . We had our day full with girls getting ready at K.P. Mall, the guys having a shave at Romeo Brother’s on Regent, back their houses to dress, Millennium Centre for Family Formals,  The Exchange with the wedding Party, The Ceremony at N.K.M.B. Church , Sunset pictures at Half Moon Lockport, then the Reception at Rembrandts-WOW!

When wedding couples ask why I “shoot” weddings with another person this is exactly why! I can’t be in two places at the same time. Paolo enjoys spending time photographing the guys while I photograph the ladies getting ready. This particular wedding as well, we included a third photographer-Scott Z. We had an awesome opportunity to photograph the ceremony from on top of  a catwalk. While Paolo and I covered the ceremony from the floor of the large sanctuary, Scott climbed up the narrow “tubeway” into the rafter’s to perch there all ceremony, catching amazing arial shots with his telephoto lens. After the ceremony, Paolo drove to Rembrandts in Lockport to photograph the details of the reception before people arrived while Scott and myself dashed off with the wedding couple to the Half Moon at lockport to just capture some sunset pics! Not only is there an advantage to covering two locations at the same time, but I’ve also included a number of examples in the blog where the two different angles captured by 2 photographer’s can add more interest to the pictorial wedding day story. And of course the most important reason of all to work with a team, photographing a wedding, –We have a great time together-and hopefully  that translates to the wedding couple/ party and friends!

Highlight of the day had to be stopping the Coca Cola truck in the Exchange District- To the driver of the truck- who ever you may be – thank’s a million for jumping out of your truck, stopping Friday  downtown rush hour traffic for us and letting us capture some shots with the truck! We LOVED your spirit!  Aymee and Stephen, Paolo , Scott and myself  had a wonderful time getting to know you better through out your Special Day. Your wedding party and family were a pleasure to photograph and work with! Great friends are a treasure! All the best with your future plans.. a move is not easy and I’m sure you’ll be missed greatly by your friends and family. For those who follow me on Facebook, the wedding album with many more pics is on it’s way!

Perfect example of two different photographic view points . My shot above, Paolo’s  below.

Congrats Dawn!

Congratulations to Dawn! Dawn won a gift certificate for a family session that I had donated to an event back in Spring. She chose the Exchange district as the location for the family session and we spent an awesome hour, a couple of Saturdays back, walking the Graffiti  lanes and tunnels of downtown Winnipeg. It was a pleasure to meet this super cool family-ladies, I loved the hair!  Dawn chose the second last colourful image for their families complimentary 8×10. Dawn also ended up purchasing a disk of images…I feel there will be some Christmas Cards in the making… Thanks family for a wonderful Afternoon!
