R&S Engagement

1916RSEngagement-2The spring season has to be my favourite season, it always holds the promise of future possibilities and new beginnings!  I have to say, we had the most perfect Spring Day for this couple’s engagement session at BirdsHill Park! The sun was shinning, the sky was blue, and the grass just beginning to to show a hint of green. What a beautiful setting to showcase a perfect Spring Day and of course the love between this couple! Associate Paolo and I enjoyed our early evening time with R & S and their dog Kodi, photographing at various locations around the park and finishing up the day with a wonderful sunset offering up some beautiful colourful light. We loved the playful nature between these two and are looking forward to their early Sept. wedding in Gimli, MB. Please enjoy a few of the images captured that evening! Congratulations go out to R &S on their Engagement!

Roaring 20’s Graduate Session

1912GeorgiaLGrad-34

I’ve known Georgia for most of her life.  This past week’s Graduation session with her was a bit emotional as it truly made me realize how fast children grow into adulthood. Before my lens was a confident beautiful lady! Not only have I know her a a friend of the family, I’ve also been a client of Georgia! Georgia  is a super talented Crocheter- creating unique pieces and participating in avenues like the Central Canada Comic Con to showcase them.  You can find some of her creations on the Consulting Crocheter on Face Book.

I was not surprised -considering she is such a creative genius-that her Graduation outfit would be uniquely stunning! I LOVED her choice of a 20’s themed outfit. The Hair by Dina at Hair Obsession and the details down to the nails and cap and pocket watch of her date, Gavin, were amazing! Of course we had to find a prime location for the Family/ Graduation session and our Manitoba Legislative building-with its tall pillars and green space, provided the perfect backdrop! Congratulations go out to Georgia on her Graduation-may your future be filled with wonderful opportunities. Continue to be you and continue to share your wonderful gifts and talents with the community! Assistant/second shooter Kristen Sawatzky and I enjoyed our time with you and your family and Graduation date Gavin, thank-you for spending part of your special day with us!

Women’s Headshots

2EDFB4x61798elkJenniferF-5 Everyone deserves to have a great headshot/ portrait of themselves! If it’s time to update your current profile pic on a social media site or a business site, consider contacting me this coming year! One of the favourite parts of my job is capturing professional portraits. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and photograph numerous amazing women in many different professions over the past year. They were all looking for a professional portrait  for various reasons. Jennifer (image above) recently took on a new opportunity working in the Winnipeg film industry.  She needed a portrait for her Linked In profile and for other applications as well.

4x6ED1746Andyelk-25I met Andy Dunlop through a friend. She is a very talented/fun Epicure Consultant, her updated images look great on her Website-check it out by clicking here!

4x6ED1746Andyelk-3Below is Melinda Friesen, an author of a popular new book “Enslavement”. Check out her blog/site here.  She required a portrait to go on the book’s jacket cover. She is currently working on more books and I’m looking forward to reading those!

She needed a portrait to be featured on the Quaker Oats Centre of Excellence portion of their Website.

It was an absolute pleasure having this young lady into the studio yesterday evening! I’ve been photographing Laura (Winnipeg Based Actor) over the last few years and I always enjoy her laugh, beautiful smile and fun personality.  She never makes it easy for me to narrow down her proofing link-always leaving me with so many great images to choose from! Here are just a couple of the 100 images or so! I’m going to get back to work putting together the proofing link-I can’t wait and see what her and her Agent decide on!

Calving Season

AshernCalvingSeasonelk2015-9

I was working on a Commercial assignment at a colleague’s studio in February and the conversation came up about work and he asked me, “What have you shot for yourself lately? ” Silence. Then I found/heard myself trying to  rationalize out loud my lack of self indulgent photography, with excuses of my busy clientele schedule. It sounded lame. I knew I had to get on it. I knew I needed a new subject to point my lens at and to get me challenged, but to also just enjoy on a personal level.

An idea came to mind. I had spoken to a previous client, Keri , a Vet from Ashern, MB last year about coming out to experience calving season, but just never got around to it. My friend Kat and I decide to make a date to drive out to the town and spend a day with Keri and experience calving season this year. It ended up being one of the most fun filled days I’ll remember for years to come!

We started our day with watching Keri’s Dog enjoy “ditch fishing”. Yep- who knew the fish hang out in the ditches in the spring from the Lake? (Not this city slicker.) It was so much fun to watch her dog go bounding into and through the ditches in pursuit of the fish- The cold and ice, not hindering his joyful efforts! He ran, leaped and shook himself off and did this repeatedly. Eventually we tucked the wet dog into the back of the truck with my friend Kat (lol) and then went to Keri’s Farm to spend sometime with her horses. Keri let the horses out of the pen and they trotted around us. I don’t know if it is just me being a “city slicker” but hearing/feeling the thudding hoofs and seeing these massive animals whipping around us, put me in a slightly awed/unnerved state. I got over that quick enough to make sure I was getting some shots of these beauties.

Then it was off to the Farm to see some of the new born calves. We arrived and I stepped out of the truck into… well, lets just say the ground was very ummmm wet. I was glad for my newly purchased black shiny rubber boots, made upon deciding on the trip. Keri told me the new calves were closer to the back of the pens with their moms. Yep-that would be, right trough the biggest puddle of….. Lets just say I was EXTREMELY grateful for no holes in the new boots!! It was a risk- carrying my gear around my neck, one little slip on the muck and into the puddle and good- bye camera. It was a risk worth taking- we got to the back and I was so amazed by all the beautiful newborn calves-some as recent as 1/2 hour old. I got some looks from the moms in the pen, but tried to stay quiet and calm and carefully raised the camera up slowly so not to scare any one of them. An experience I will never forget. Then we went into the barn where there were a couple of orphaned  calves a day old. Kat fed one with a gigantic bottle and I fell in love with a beautiful red/brown calf with beautiful curly hair. It followed me around and then I thought I would see if it wanted to play. I pranced up and down beside it and then it too started to prance in a playful way. I burst out laughing-The sight of a calf prancing is absolutely, heartwarmingly, adorable.

A huge Thank-you to Keri for her hospitality on a most perfect Day. Please enjoy just a few of the images captured during this wonderful Day. Looking forward to sharing with you more images of my personal projects and days in the very near future! Graduate Julie

ED1736elkJulie-53Graduates-It is not too early to book for a portrait session! In the past few years, I’ve had graduates and their families book a photo session as early as April.  Booking a portrait session ahead of the graduation date allows for a much more relaxed time in front of the camera… and as we know, most graduates have their dresses and suits chosen and delivered within that time frame.  I love meeting new clients and photo sessions celebrating graduations is a real treat!  Julie and her family invited me to capture this event for them last year.  Her dress was amazing-Such a beautiful colour and the detail so intricate!  We started with studio portraits with her and her family and then I spent some time photographing Julie in the studio and at the Legislative Building for some outdoor images as well. She had such a sparkling personality and was a delight to photograph! I also enjoy customizing the session to the graduate’s personality and/or interests!   Booking for sessions has begun-so if you are interested in more information call or contact me via my Website!

Newborn Leah

1786elkNewbornLeah-18The first Day of Spring has arrived ! I find myself so inspired and rejuvenated with the promise of a new season. The warm temps this past week spurred me into action -I found myself ordering some new backdrops and props! I hopped in the car for the 6 hour drive to pick them up this weekend and even the big snowflakes coming down during the drive could not curb my enthusiasm for the anticipated future sessions using the newly purchased goods.

I haven’t found the time to blog over the couple last months-I had the amazing opportunity to teach the Industry Studies Diploma class at the PrairieView School of Photography for 8 weeks,  while also keeping up with client sessions, making for some busy months. Unfortunately I always find the blogging is the first thing that drops off of my to do list! So that being said, I have a lot of catching up to do! I’m starting with the flurry of activity before the Christmas season!

That “flurry” of activity had alot to do with some beautiful little ladies arriving in time for the holidays.  Let’s meet the first! I photographed Jeff and Astrids Wedding just over a year ago now and was so excited to have heard they welcomed their new baby girl into the world. It was so special meeting her and having her in front of my lens!! Here are just a few images captured during our time together! Congratulations go out to the parents!!

Miss Amelia is 1!

1796elkAmeliaisone-22Wow -I’m always amazed how fast a baby can grow within their first year!!   Some motions and mannerisms are so precious and fleeting and are often only experienced a handful of times before they move on to another stage in their development. Documenting/photographing a child through these early growth stages can provide cherished memories for years to come.  I was so fortunate to photograph Miss Amelia even before birth during her Mother’s maternity session and then at birth, 6 months, 9 months and now at a year. I so enjoyed each and every session-always amazed at the new things she could do! Here are just a few of the images captured of her celebrating her first year and a few more from each of her photo sessions- Enjoy!

D&R Family Fall Session

1765elkDRFamily-29Blog 14 of 14 in a row! Wow-So good to have a project completed! I have to say, it’s been a great review of the last part of the year for me, going back through the images. The blogging will continue into the New Year-I’m thinking now of doing a “Cradle roll” of all the Newborns I’ve had the opportunity to photograph in 2014. Stay tuned! 🙂

I had not seen D&R in a couple of years for a photo session  – the last time we were together I was photographing them and their newly adopted son. So I was thrilled to hear from them again this year with the great news that they had adopted a second son and would like to do a photo session! 🙂 I just loved spending time with the Family at Kings Park- We had a lot of Fun playing in the leaves and enjoying the beautiful colours of the season! I could just sense and see the love among them and the images are evidence of that! Here are just a few of the images captured that day. Enjoy!

It’s Christmas Eve!

FB1783elkKDFamily-68

Its Christmas Eve!!! I can’t believe how this year has flown by!  Hopefully all presents are wrapped, gatherings planned and you’re finding some time just to enjoy the next couple of days with friends or family!

Nov. was a bustle with holiday portrait sessions in the studio. I’ve had a wonderful time photographing this family over the years and a few more times this year as we captured Baby Amelia growing up in her first year! Little Derek had a wish to do this years Family Christmas photos in pj’s! Why not! So we made that happen in the studio and had a really fun time creating some unique images. (Great idea Derek!) Here are just a few of the images we captured at their session. P.S.-Don’t forget to leave cookies out for Santa tonight! 🙂

Early Evening Family Session

1756elkWarner-4Early evening, late afternoon, sunset -no matter what you call it, it’s a magical time to photograph! When I can, I always try to schedule families in the evening, just as the sun creeps behind the trees and horizon and sends its wonderful warm colours onto my clients and into the images. It’s a bit of a gamble- depends on the cloud coverage that day and timing of the sunset and of course the challenge of a lot more insects (Usually gigantic mosquitoes here in Winnipeg :-)) . Even images thrown into black and white work as the light catches on leaves and thistles and hair and makes the images seem to “twinkle”.  So glad the “W” Family agreed to give it a go-I loved the way the images turned out with the colours and light!  Here are just a few images we captured as the sun went down and light faded in the park! Thanks go out to the family for a fun session! Enjoy!

“Super” Family Fall Session!

FB1772elkVernon-21It was so great to meet up with this family for a photo session again! They had moved away from Manitoba for a while and I was super happy to find they had returned to Winnipeg!  They are all naturals in front of the camera and were eager to “ham it up” for some of the shots as you’ll see! 🙂  It turned out to be a good hour of laughs with them! The Fall colours were so beautiful, the weather amazing and I had a lot of fun with the Superman costume  brought along for the youngest. We found a field at the park that was the perfect backdrop for the costume! (I love when clients come with cool props and ideas like this!) Enjoy!

Fall Maternity Session

FBPage 1lI remember the summer morning my neighbour’s daughter came over to tell me the exciting news that she was pregnant and asked if we could look at doing a Maternity session.  We planned for Fall at a park in her neighbourhood.  The day turned out to be beautiful (expect for some late season mosquitos!) – a warm day with stunning coloured foliage as our backdrop! I was thrilled to be asked by her mother to create a surprise album for her for her recent birthday. Here are a few of the pages that made it into the album! She had a beautiful baby girl not long after the session and I’ll be doing a blog on that as well! Stay tuned! 🙂

Fall Family Time

FB1764DesireFamilyelk-29

And I’m back! Sorry, it’s been a while since the last post! This past fall season has been a blur- time just flew and here we are just a couple of weeks before Christmas.  Although the pace was hectic, it was an absolutely wonderful time of the year, filled with the most awesome clients, fun sessions and some cherished memories!  I’ve decided that I will post a blog a day till Christmas and share some of the beautiful locations, wonderful clients and fun times. Let’s begin with this super Family! I have enjoyed working with Desiree over the past few years as a business client, but this year’s  “bonus” was having her share her family with me for this photo session!  We took advantage of this year’s amazing fall weather and had the perfect day for a session at Birds Hill Park. Here are just a few images captured that Day! You can really see the changing leaf colour in the last shot-Enjoy!

K&D Maternity Session

web1701-13KDMaternityelk0005

I love the phone calls with great news!  I photographed K&D’s wedding a couple of years back and when I heard K’s voice on the phone a few months back I knew this must be it! Yes-They were expecting! I loved spending time with them in the studio and celebrating the anticipation  of a newborn. Here are just a few of the images captured during the session- Congrats K&D!! Looking forward to meeting the newest family member soon!!:-)

My evening with a Ninja, Rapunzel and a Peacock

web1687-13elkHollins-30

Last month I had the pleasure of photographing this family at Kings Park.  They brought their Halloween costumes, so I had the bonus of photographing a Ninja,  Rapunzel, and an adorable Peacock (She even had the feather motif on the stockings!!) The sunset created some gorgeous natural light as the sun’s rays filtered through the woods! Here are just a couple of my favs from the session. I suspect they are going to make a large haul this evening  trick -or-treating!!
